Brandi Morin on Journalism, Justice, and Indigenous Women's Voices

When I was asked to write about Brandi Morin for Ontario Native Women's Association's (ONWA) publication She Is Wise, I already knew she was a force. But speaking with her directly, I realized: she’s not just reporting on stories, she is one.

Brandi Morin is an Inuk-Cree journalist, filmmaker, and warrior of truth. Her work takes her from protest lines to prisons, from environmental frontline communities to national newsrooms — and everywhere in between. She’s covered everything from land defense to the Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women and Girls crisis, and her storytelling continues to hold systems accountable and bring Indigenous realities to the forefront.

She’s been arrested while reporting. She’s created a documentary (Killer Water) featuring some of my own family in Fort Chipewyan. She’s taken every risk a journalist can take...and still shows up, with grit, grace, and fire.

“This work is not for the faint of heart. It’s heavy-duty, emotional, spiritual and physical labour.”

There are some voices that speak for a moment and others that echo through generations. Brandi Morin’s work reminds us that storytelling is sovereignty. And that journalism, when done with heart and accountability, is one of the most sacred acts of resistance and reclamation we have.
